Homemade Enchilada Sauce
Homemade enchilada sauce is easy to make and tastes much better then that which you buy in a can or jar. The directions are easy and not time consuming. You may want to make your sauce first to be able to place a few spoonfulls of it onto the enchiladas you will be baking, as some recipes call for a small amount of sauce to be added at the beginning.
Save the remaining amount for after the enchiladas are finished. Spoon over cooked enchiladas while still hot.
You will need the following ingredients:
- 1/4 tsp. Garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 4 tablespoons oil (vegetable or peanut)
- 1/2 cup chili powder
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 3-1/2 cups of water
- 1/2 cup of tomato sauce.
- Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat setting.
- Stir in flour and cook for approximately 1-1/2 minutes.
- Stir in water with a whisk to avoid lumps.
- Add chili powder, tomato sauce and garlic powder.
- Turn heat to low, cover and let simmer slowly for at least 20 minutes.
Enchiladas are served well with refried beans or a side dish of nachos with salsa.
